17 Essential Tools for Moving Day

After restless days of packing, moving day is finally here. You’ve waited for your movers to arrive but before they get there, make sure to leave the following tools out. Do you know which items are essential during moving day? We’ve got you covered on some of the most important tools that will help you on the big day.

1. Scissors

Scissors, one of the most essentials items to have during your move. You’ll need them when you open your first boxes as you move in. There’s always a need of scissors on moving day! Just don’t run with them.

2. Washi tape and regular tape

This will come in handy on moving day. Simply tape the bedroom doors with the colorful tape so you’ll know where each box goes and the movers won’t have to ask you over and over again where your items go.

3. Sharpies

This is the perfect writing tool for any last minute labeling. Label at least three sides of a box so no matter which way the box is facing, you’ll know what’s in it.

4. Sandwich bags

Sandwich bags are the ultimate must-have on moving day. Where are you going to put your bed frame screws? Surely you’ll want to keep them safe. You can tape them to your bed frame or put them inside a purse for safekeeping. Bag all the small parts of things you will have to disassemble. Label the bags so you know which furniture item they call home.

5. Cleaning supplies

Hopefully the previous renter or homeowner cleaned the place. You’ll still want to have all-purpose cleaner, paper towels, a broom, and a vacuum available. Before setting up your new home, a good clean will have to be done. Who knows how much the previous owners cleaned? Do it once more, and make sure to give the bathrooms a good scrubbing.

6. Snacks

Moving requires heavy lifting; snacks will fuel the energy you need for carrying boxes. For long lasting energy, pack some healthy snacks like yogurts, granola bars, almonds, peanut butter sandwiches, bananas, and trail mix. These snacks are quick, easy and can make a difference by boosting your energy level and keeping you alert on moving day.

7. Water

It’s important to stay hydrated during your move and even more so in the hot summer months. Don’t be surprised; winter weather dehydrates too so be sure to constantly drink water throughout your move. (Pro tip: No mover ever turns down a frosty bottle of water!)

8. Chargers

Your phone cannot die on moving day! Your battery drains out when you make phone calls and stream your music from your phone. Having your cell phone charger will allow using your phone throughout the move. SML always calls to check in on your moving day to make sure all is going well.

9. Music/Speaker

Music is essential to making your move just a little less stressful! Replace all that stress with some music and dancing. Crank up the speaker just a little louder to really lighten things up.

10. Post-Its

When you need to label something you forgot, Post-it. Better yet, label each wall where you want to place your sofa, bed, etc.

12. Unused boxes for the entrance floor

You probably don’t want dirt coming in and out of the home so if you don’t have a doormat, place disassembled cardboard boxes on the entrance floor and on hardwood/tile. This helps prevent scuffs and scratches even on door frames, too.

13. “Open first” boxes

These vital boxes should be the first thing you open at the new place. Remember to label the sides of the boxes, not the tops so you’ll be able to identify them when they’re stacked.

14. Magic sliders

Moving furniture has never been easier with these sliding discs. I recommend you use the magic sliders only on carpet. They should work on any surface but test it out first in case it leaves any scratch marks on hardwood or tile.

15. Plastic bags for trash

You will likely need to clean on your way out, or in. If you’re short on boxes, simply pack some stuff in plastic bags. You can always toss a few towels and other lightweight items. You can also use these bags for any last minute decluttering, and put stuff in for donation. Be careful not to confuse them with real trash!

16. Set of tools

Although your movers will bring a basic set of tools when they help you move, be sure to have your own tools available as backup. You will likely need some specialty tools like a set of allen wrench for disassembling and assembling furniture.

17. Roll of shrink-wrap

Shrink-wrap helped my items arrive safely at my new home. I shrink wrapped just about anything loose I had: Lamps, art frames, and even furniture.
